All notifications come to one app. The hub sends them over its SIM card even if there is no internet at the cottage, and its backup battery keeps the system running during a power cut. The Plus package costs 678 € to buy or 23.56 €/month to rent.

Doors and yard: door sensor, motion sensor, outdoor siren 110 dB

Water: water leak sensor under the boiler, pump and pipes

Heating: a smart plug switches the radiator on before you arrive

In October you make the last trip to the countryside, turn off the water, lock the door, and the next visit is in spring. In between, the cottage stands empty for months and nobody sees whether the door has been forced or water is running from under the boiler. In 2025, 12,563 thefts were registered in Estonia, the most in the last ten years (Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, crime statistics). An empty house nobody visits is an easy target for a thief. Below, step by step, is which sensor goes where in a summer cottage, and why.

1. How do you protect a summer cottage from break-ins in winter?

Start with the doors. A door sensor goes on every outside door, including the terrace and sauna doors. It raises the alarm the moment the door opens, before anyone has got inside. Second, a motion sensor indoors: if someone comes in through a window, the motion sensor sees it. One sensor covers about 30 m², which is the living room of a typical summer cottage.

Third, the yard. An outdoor motion sensor lets you know as soon as someone is moving around the house, before they reach the door. An outdoor motion sensor with camera sends a series of photos when an alarm goes off, even in the dark, so you can see straight away whether it is a person or a roe deer in the yard. An outdoor siren with flashing light (110 dB) also alerts the neighbours, because nobody hears an indoor siren in an empty house.

Device

Where in the cottage

Buy

Rent

Hub

in a socket, SIM and battery inside

172 €

12.40 €/month

Door sensor

every outside door

30 €

1.24 €/month

Motion sensor

living room, at 2.1 m

36 €

1.24 €/month

Motion sensor with camera

hallway or main door

75 €

1.86 €/month

Outdoor motion sensor

yard, facing the shed or driveway

161 €

4.34 €/month

Outdoor motion sensor with camera

same, with photos

238 €

7.44 €/month

Outdoor siren

outside wall, facing the road

70 €

3.10 €/month

Water leak sensor

boiler, pump, pipes

37 €

1.24 €/month

Smoke, carbon monoxide and temperature detector

room with the stove or fireplace

82 €

3.72 €/month

Smart plug

electric radiator

29 €

1.86 €/month

Tip. Put a motion sensor with camera in the cottage hallway. If an alarm goes off at three in the morning and you are 150 km away, the photos show you straight away whether it is worth calling a neighbour or 112. A standard sensor only tells you that something moved.

2. How do you spot a water leak at the cottage before spring?

In an unheated house, a frozen pipe can crack. Nobody notices until the thaw: then the water starts running, and by the time someone finally arrives, the floor is already soaked. The water leak sensor (37 € or 1.24 €/month) has a cable probe: the probe goes on the floor, and when it gets wet, a notification comes straight to your phone.

Put the water leak sensor where water collects first:

under the boiler or water heater

by the water pump and pressure tank

under the kitchen sink and dishwasher

in the sauna washroom, where the pipes come up through the floor

If there are three such spots, get three sensors. When you buy, extra sensors don’t raise the monthly fee, which stays at 9.18 €/month. Even if you drain the water for winter, the sensor is useful in autumn and spring, when the pipes are full and night frosts have already arrived.

3. Does a summer cottage need a smoke and carbon monoxide detector?

Yes, especially if the cottage has a stove, a fireplace or a wood-fired sauna heater. The smoke, carbon monoxide and temperature detector (82 € or 3.72 €/month) detects smoke, carbon monoxide and a rapid rise in temperature. Carbon monoxide is invisible and has no smell, so without a detector you won’t notice it. For the owner of a house or flat, a smoke detector is also mandatory (Fire Safety Act § 32(3)), and the fine is up to 300 fine units.

At a summer cottage there is an important difference: a standard smoke detector only beeps in the room, and nobody hears it in an empty house. An alarm system detector also sends a notification to your phone, so you know about a fire even when you are in town and can call 112 straight away.

4. Does a summer cottage alarm work without internet?

Yes. The hub has a SIM card and alarms go out over the mobile network, so you don’t need Wi-Fi or a router at the cottage. The mobile connection is included in the monthly fee: 9.18 €/month when you buy, and included in the price when you rent. The hub also has a backup battery, so if a storm cuts the power, alarms still reach your phone. The sensors run on batteries, and the app shows each sensor’s battery level, so you know before spring whether any need replacing.

You arm the system with a code or tag on the keypad, with a key fob or from your phone. If a neighbour sometimes clears the snow in winter, they get their own code and the app shows when they disarmed and re-armed the system.

5. How do you warm up the cottage before you arrive?

The smart plug (29 € or 1.86 €/month) handles a load of up to 16 A, which is enough for an electric radiator or oil-filled radiator. Switch it on from your phone a couple of hours before you leave town, and on Friday evening the room is already warmer. When you drive back, you switch the same plug off from your phone. Bear in mind that the smart plug switches the power on and off. It doesn’t replace a thermostat.

6. Should you buy or rent a summer cottage alarm?

The Plus package (11 devices) usually suits a summer cottage: hub, keypad, 2 door sensors, 2 motion sensors, a camera sensor, a smoke detector, a smoke, carbon monoxide and temperature detector, and indoor and outdoor sirens. The water leak sensor and smart plug are added separately. Installation is one visit, 150 €, and our technicians work all over Estonia, including the countryside.

Plus package

Buy

Rent

At the start

678 € devices + 150 € installation

150 € installation

Every month

9.18 €

23.56 €

After 1 year

938 €

433 €

After 3 years

1,158 €

998 €

After 5 years

1,379 €

1,564 €

Broken device

2-year right to claim, then a technician visit from 35.20 €

by the price list

Buying pays for itself in about 47 months (678 € divided by the 14.38 € difference in monthly fees). Rent is for a minimum of 3 months, and you give 3 months’ notice to end it. If you only want the alarm for winter, keep the notice period in mind: to end it at the end of April, give notice at the end of January. But a summer cottage is also empty on weekdays in summer, so the alarm is useful all year round.

Our advice

If the cottage is yours and you plan to keep it for a long time, buy: over four years buying is cheaper, and extra sensors don’t raise the monthly fee. If you want to try it for the first winter or plan to sell the cottage, rent. Either way, add at least one water leak sensor.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does a summer cottage alarm work without power and internet?

Without internet, yes: the GSMvalve hub sends alarms over its SIM card. During a power cut, the hub’s built-in battery keeps the system running and alarms still reach your phone. The sensors run on batteries.
</details>
<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How much does a summer cottage alarm system cost?

The GSMvalve Plus package (11 devices, including a camera sensor, an outdoor siren and a smoke, carbon monoxide and temperature detector) costs 678 € to buy or 23.56 €/month to rent, and installation is 150 €. A water leak sensor is 37 € or 1.24 €/month extra. Prices include VAT.
</details>
<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I rent a summer cottage alarm just for the winter?

Yes. The GSMvalve rental contract has no fixed end date, the minimum is 3 months, and you need to give 3 months’ notice to end it. Repairs to a rented device are charged by the price list.
</details>
<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Will a technician come to install it in the countryside?

Yes. GSMvalve technicians work all over Estonia and installation costs the same everywhere, 150 €. It is one visit, usually a couple of hours, with no cables and no building work.
</details>

Read also: Plus package for houses · the water leak sensor on the devices page · is buying or renting cheaper

An empty summer cottage is at risk in two ways in winter: an intruder and a burst pipe.
